Year 3 children are now moving onto learning about the ‘ou’ making the ‘uh’ sound as part of their spelling and grammar lessons.

At the end of this half term the children will be tested through dictation to see if they have remembered this spelling rule! Children love their spelling and grammar lessons that take place daily- on Tuesday we played ‘ou’ dominoes! 

Some examples of words we are learning are;

young
double
trouble

courage
flourish 
nourish

tough
enough 

Some parents find that posting the words around the house helps children to recognise them daily! You could also encourage your child to play “teachers” at home and let them show you how to write the word within a sentence. 

We are also working on learning the definitions and synonyms (other words with the same meaning). They are really enjoying this game of finding definitions! 

Please keep going with the spellings at home. Large numbers of children have now completed all first 300 words and are working solely on the year 3 words! If you have been given year 1&2 words to learn with your child, please treat this as the priority before year 3 words.

Year 3 have discovered 2 mysterious eggs by our frog pond in the playground.

We assume they are eggs but we cannot be sure.  At the moment we are calling them “unidentified objects”.  Here is a picture of what we found.

We have used our imaginations to decide what they may be.  Some say they are dragon eggs, some say they belong to an oversized bird.  Others say they have travelled through time via a black hole or a vortex.  Josh thought they have appeared here due to telekinesis.

Year 3 would like to tell you about our Music lessons this term !

First we composed music in the style of the Aztecs.  We had fun using natural and man-made materials in the school grounds to create sound and rhythm.

After that our focus has been Animal Magic. We have added mimed greetings and percussion accompaniments to the Tortoise song. Then we made animal hasthas (hand shapes) using hand movements for different animals. At the moment we are composing our own music to represent an animal moving. We are going to use graphic notation to record our music.

A big thank you to all parents and carers who contributed so generously to our cake and biscuit decorating day. We had such a lovely time decorating the biscuits with fancy designs  and making them as attractive as possible. We think even Mr Wonka himself would have been pleased with our designs! We managed to raise an excellent £69.50 from the sale and we will be using this money towards our trip to the aquarium in the second half of the autumn term. You will receive more information about this in the coming days. 

A big thank you to everybody who came in with money and bought cakes and biscuits for siblings and family members too. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed creating them! 

Another thank you to Josh, Ryan, Gloria and Alfie and many others who were our shopkeepers for the day and worked so hard to give everybody the right change they needed. You are stars!

Thank you for your patience while we update your children’s spelling books.  We are very impressed with the spellings the children have remembered so far and we are well on ur way to ensuring every child has filled any gaps in their spellings from Year 1 and 2.

If your child has a note in their book saying well done for completing Year 1/2 words, they are ready to move onto Year 3 spellings.  By Christmas, we would like the children to know the following words.  If they are still working on Year 1 and 2 words, that is the priority and they should know these first before moving on 🙂

Hi all!

Just an update on our maths so far!

We have a strong focus on place value to 1000 at the moment.  Children are demonstrating their understanding of three digit numbers by comparing, ordering, building numbers with dienes equipment (the hundreds, tens and ones blocks) and finding the difference between two numbers.  Some children have started adding with hundreds, tens and ones using simple column addition and subtraction.  We have been shopkeepers and bought items using £1, 10p and 1p coins to represent the hundreds tens and units.

On Tuesday, we will be creating large and small 3 digit numbers from 3 number cards, deciding which is the biggest and smallest and finding the difference between the 2 numbers.   On Wednesday we continue with Fast Maths and times tables work in our breaks before/after swimming.  On Thursday we are becoming estate agents and deciding which 5 houses are the most cost effective and will give them the most change from £999.  Don’t you wish you could buy a house for under £1000?! 🙂  On Friday we will be in charge of celebrity payslips and deciding which celebrities have the greatest wages!

Also, a massive thank you for such kind donations so far for our Wonka sweet treats day.  We hope to raise lots of money so we can subsidise our trip to the aquarium in Autumn 2 and use the data to support further learning in maths using hundreds, tens and ones.

In year 3 we have to learn some very tricky words!

We have broken them down into terms to make it manageable for children to learn them.

We practice these words in handwriting and in class.  It would really help us and your children if you could write these at home together and have little races and quizzes etc!

These words are for this term;

actual, actually, address, arrive, believe, breath, breathe, build, calendar, century, complete, consider, continue, decide, describe, different, difficult, early.

Once you have learned how to spell them together from memory, why not try and write them in a sentence!

Hi all!

We have had a lovely time so far in Year 3!

We are learning about Charlie and the Chocolate factory, as well as learning about the Aztecs.  The Aztecs helped bring chocolate over to Europe (Mrs Toms is very grateful!) and they had a very interesting culture with traditions.  We will learn more about them as the weeks go on.

So far we have been visited by Willy Wonka, given copies of the book, eaten disgusting cabbage soup and talked about the poor Bucket family.

Last week Beech Class had a lovely morning at Pizza Express making Pizzas.

Once they had washed their hands and put on the aprons and hats, the children were shown all of the ingredients needed to make a pizza base including milk, flour, oil, salt, yeast and water. They then shaped their pizza dough into the baking trays then laid the tomato sauce on top. After sprinkling cheese on top of the tomato sauce the pizzas were put into the oven.

As it was a beautiful sunny day, the children enjoyed eating the pizzas in the park.

We had great fun this morning making a drink for Geoffrey the Giraffe (we have been reading his story in our Literacy lessons).

First we got a cup and put our name on it. Then we went outside and looked for different ingredients to put into the drink because Geoffrey doesn’t like water. We found grass, leaves, flowers, berries and sticks. Mrs O’Brien brought  some herbs into school and we added a pinch of these too.  We added some water and then stirred it with the stirring stick!
