Science Week

During Science Week,  the Year 1s conducted an experiment to see which materials was the best for protecting an egg.  We tried dropping the egg from a great height onto a surface and then wrapped an egg inside the material.  We found out that the best material to protect an egg was the wool and the worst was wood and metal.

Can you think of any other materials that could protect an egg?IMG_1779 IMG_1780 IMG_1781 IMG_1782 IMG_1783 IMG_1784 IMG_1786 IMG_1787 IMG_1789 IMG_1792 IMG_1795 IMG_1796 IMG_1798 IMG_1800 IMG_1801 IMG_1802 IMG_1807 IMG_1811

Money in Maths

Hi all!

Chestnut class have been working hard to use different coins to make amounts of money.

We have been shopping in the classroom and counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to make amounts up to 50p!  Some children have been challenged to make amounts over £1!

If you go shopping with your children, let them pay the cashier and ask them how many different ways you could make the total.  You’ll be surprised at what they can tell you!

Drama!

We have been reading the story of Farmer Duck.

Poor Farmer Duck has to do all the work when the lazy, fat farmer stays in bed eating chocolates and candies!  As you can imagine, Farmer Duck is weary and weepy until his animal friends decide to do something to help him!!

The children have been engaged in this wonderful story and have called out “How goes the work?” many times!

Below are some photographs taken from our Farmer Duck drama lesson.

See if you can spot which children are Farmer Duck!! IMG_1710 IMG_1711 IMG_1712 IMG_1713 IMG_1714 IMG_1715 IMG_1716 IMG_1717 IMG_1718 IMG_1719 IMG_1720 IMG_1721 IMG_1722

Capacity and Volume

Year 1 have been learning about the capacity of containers.  To do this, we had a race to fill up different containers.  While the children were filling the containers to the top with water, the other children were estimating how many containers they would need to fill the large container.  We then tallied the number of containers used to see if our estimate was right!

On the Farm

Year 1 have been very fortunate to watch chicks hatch from their eggs.  We looked after them in the incubator and then moved them to the brooder box when they were dry and fluffy.  Miss Munro had fun looking after them over the weekend!!

We were able to hold them as long as we were very gentle.  All our children were brave enough to hold them!

Here are some of our pictures.
