Finding the Inverse

Hi all

This week in Ash & Aspen we are busy finding the inverse for addition and subtraction problems.  This is proving to be very challenging! Any support at home you can give the children will be beneficial.

For example if presented with the question   ______ – 20 = 40, we can add the 20 + 40 back together to make 60.  We then must prove that it works by completing 60-20=40.  If the 3 numbers match, then we are correct.  If they do not match we need to check for errors in our adding or subtracting.

Once the children are secure in doing this with 2 digit numbers, move onto 3 digit numbers.

Many thanks,

Mrs Toms

Lightbot App

Hello everyone,

We are playing with the Lightbot App today.  We are learning about algorithms and how we input instructions into a computer in the right order.  Here are some pictures- some levels were tricky but we persevered and shared our knowledge when a friend was stuck!

Pompeii Day

Hi all!

What a lovely day we have had in Year 3 during Pompeii Day!  Thank you to everyone that took part by dressing up.

We found out about Roman gladiators in the Coliseum and mimed their actions during a drama lesson (no children were hurt in the making of these pictures!).

Then we worked in small groups with Mrs Peel to make delicious Italian pizzas.  We chose from cheese, peppers, ham and sweetcorn as our ingredients.  Aspen class couldn’t wait to eat theirs in the afternoon but Ash managed to take theirs home to eat.  I hope they were all delicious! 🙂

Year 3 PE

Due to the snow falling from the sky and whizzing around in the wind, it wasn’t safe enough for us to carry out our normal kwik cricket lessons so we had to change our lesson to suit being indoors!

We watched a Joe Wicks Body Coach workout and copied his movements to complete the High Intensity Workout for schools.  Joe Wicks posted a week long series of workouts for schools that you can access from home by clicking on the following link; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TGEdzRzSbw

After this, we listened to relaxing music and carried out some mindfulness activities.

A very different but very energetic lesson!

Stone Age Food & Homes

Year 3 are really enjoying learning about the Stone Age.

We have learned about the Palaeolithic era (2.6 million years ago), through to the Mesolithic era (after the glaciers and ice!, also known as the middle of the Stone Age) up to the Neolithic era which lasted until approximately 12000 years ago.

We have made fruit stews as the Stone Age humans would have done and today we found out about the different types of homes.

We discovered that Palaeolithic humans made use of caves to escape the harsh weathers.  Why make a home when there is already a home available?!

We then discovered that Mesolithic homes were more advanced than caves as they began using their tools to build these teepee- shaped houses. They would have used animal skins to cover the wooden structures and placed turf on the floors inside.

The two images below are from the Neolithic era.  Both used more advanced tools and required more intelligence to create.  Some followed the round style, where others became rectangular.  They used thatching for the roofs or wattle and daub.

We will use the information we discovered in groups to write paragraphs comparing the different dwellings to our homes nowadays.

WE ARE PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Wow Year 3!

What an amazing job you did of taking and editing interesting photos!

You worked really hard to use the correct lighting, use the shadows to your advantage, adjust the light and focus and on top of that you edited really well!  You added filters and cropped your images to improve and enhance them.

Mrs Toms was REALLY impressed!

Number bonds

Hi all!

We are working really hard to quickly say the pairs of numbers that add together to make any number up to 20.

Some of the children have forgotten their number pairs to 10 already! Please make sure your child knows that 2+ 8 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10 and so on.  This can be done on the way to school, at a bus stop or train station etc- it doesn’t have to be formal learning sessions!

If children practise daily, they are more likely to remember it 🙂 Think of it like learning a new language- if you don’t use it, you lose it!  We cannot estimate answers to larger number pairs such as 55 + 42.

We want the children to know pairs such as 9+ 3= 12, 10 + 4 = 14, 6 + 5 = 12 off the top of their heads! Then, they should apply this to any number e.g 24 + 24 = 48, 50 + 6 – 56

A great way to do this is also through Hit the Button! ( https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button).

Many thanks for your support.
