Poppies

This week the whole school have been decorating their own poppies. Most of the time we paint the poppies red because it is the classic colour of poppies and on Flanders Field when they started to grow it looked like a flood of the blood from the soldiers who died in battle. This year we got to paint purple poppies because they are for all of the animals that were killed in the wars like dogs, horses and pigeons. We also got to use a variety of techniques of how to decorate it like using a cotton bud and paint or felt tips. This year is a very special year because it is 100 years since World War 1 ended.

MY BODY

This week in Year 1 we have been learning all about our body parts and finding out different facts about them.

Did you know that your heart is around about the size of your clenched fist?
The children have also been comparing their body to parts to animal body parts.
Did you know that an octopus has 3 hearts?

In maths this week, the children have been learning about numbers and the place value of numbers. The children have been using dienes to represent numbers. See the picture below.
They have been learning how many 10s are within a given number and how many units. The children have been enjoying learning this concept and they are becoming confident in this concept and they are getting better at counting up to 100 as well as understanding the place value of a given number.

Lima’s Red Hot Chilli Pepper!

This week we have been looking at the text “Lima’s red hot chilli pepper’. Lima is very hungry wants to eat a range of different food and by accident eats a red hot chilli! Her family then come to the rescue to cool down her mouth.

In year 1, we have been tasting the different foods that Lima had.  We loved tasting new foods and we discussed the texture and taste of them. Both classes tried coconut, lime, samosas, jelly and pink grapefruit!

Welcome to year 1!

Welcome to year 1! It’s great to be back and we have been learning lots already! In our first topic we are learning about our senses.

We have had a few activities linking around this. Our first one was all about touch. We had to make sure we weren’t peeking and try and guess the object in the box by touching it. Another task we had to do was smell different cups without peeking and guess the object as well.

We loved it!

Sports Day

Towards the end of the week, we had both KS1 and KS2 Sports Day. The weather was great and the children were ready to go! Each child wore either red, yellow, green or blue and represented their colour/house in their races. KS2 Sports Day took place first with a 9:30 start, it saw the children take part in sprints, long jump, long distance, throwing and a relay.
During lunch time there was a picnic on the field where parents, children and teachers ate lunch and enjoyed a BBQ put on by The Friends of Elm Park Primary.
The KS1 Sports Day started shortly after lunch. Children took part in 6 events egg and spoon race, sprint, obstacle relay, corridor relay, ball throw and the sack race.
We would like to thank all parents and careers for attending and The Friends of Elm Park Primary for supporting. A final thank you to Evie Bragger for her fantastic photography.

Supertato

One of our focus books has been ‘Supertato’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.

The children have absolutely loved this story as it is all about an evil pea who causes havoc around a supermarket, ‘Supertato’ comes to save the day!

The children have created their own version of the story for you.

We have also been writing about the characters from the story, here are some examples.

SNOW!!! and World Book Day

What a busy week!

The children have loved playing in the snow this week. They have been building a snowman and making snow angels. We have been able to have some really in-depth conversations about snow and where the children think snow comes from and how they think its made.

World Book Day

World Book Day was a great success. The children looked brilliant in their costumes and loved being able to talk about the characters they can as and their favourite books.

They were visited by year 6 who came and shared a story, and then in the afternoon their parents came in and joined their children to share a story.

A visit to the fishmongers

fish-300x200

On Thursday, Willow 1 and Willow 2 took a trip down to the Elm Park fish mongers, as we have been reading a book all about a fish called ‘Tiddler’. The children were able to touch a live lobster, they tasted some seaweed, they felt a squid and even watched a fish being gutted. The children were able to ask some great questions, and throughly enjoyed their visit.
