Year 1 have been learning about the capacity of containers. To do this, we had a race to fill up different containers. While the children were filling the containers to the top with water, the other children were estimating how many containers they would need to fill the large container. We then tallied the number of containers used to see if our estimate was right!
Year 1 have been very fortunate to watch chicks hatch from their eggs. We looked after them in the incubator and then moved them to the brooder box when they were dry and fluffy. Miss Munro had fun looking after them over the weekend!!
We were able to hold them as long as we were very gentle. All our children were brave enough to hold them!

This week we have been learning some dances from different continents and balancing along a beam. I wonder if you can guess which continent the dragon dances come from!
In Year 1, we are attempting some very tricky counting skills!
We have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s all the way up to 100!!!

You can help us by counting as many objects in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s as you can e.g. let us count the sweets in 2s before we eat them (we promise not to eat them all!).
Mrs Warnes is usually in school throughout the week to listen to the children read.
This week, however, is no ordinary week! As we are learning about ‘Toys’, we asked Mrs Warnes to come and speak to the children about the toys and games she played with as a child.
Mrs Warnes told us that when she was a very small girl she lived in Ireland and didn’t receive her first real toy until she was 7 years old!
Mrs Warnes’ dad had been stationed during the war and sent her a precious dolly from India. But when Mrs Warnes opened the parcel, the dolly had sadly become damaged. In the olden days, there were places known as ‘Doll Hospitals’ and luckily Mrs Warnes managed to take her doll there to be fixed.
Mrs Warnes told us about the small TV they used to have that didn’t have many shows or channels so most of the games they played were outside. Mrs Warnes remembers playing Hopscotch, Marbles and Jacks. She also told us about being told off by the lady in the neighbouring house!
It was a real treat and we thank Mrs Warnes for her time!
On Monday 9th November, the children from Elm Park Primary School took part in a very exciting Pro-Kick challenge!
Lots of children raised money! We had to kick the ball as hard and fast as we could and the large machine measured it in miles per hour!
It was almost as if we were kicking a football into a giant bouncy castle! We had so much fun and the sports leaders were very impressed with our footballing abilities!

Hi all!
Today we had our visit from Maria from Dog’s Trust!
It was very informative and we have learned lots of new facts that we didn’t already know! We played senses games and our friends had to guess which item was in their hands using only their sense of touch.
We all looked fabulous in our costumes! Some of us had our faces painted and wore costumes! There were also some very spotty children in our school!
We now know how to be responsible dog owners and how to care for a dog correctly.
Thank you for providing wonderful costumes and for your kind donations. We will wait until the end of the week for any more donations to be sent to Dog’s Trust.
Year 1 have been learning about Picasso in their art lessons. That has linked well with our topic of ‘Food and Senses’ as it links to our bodies and the wonderful (and weird!) things they can do!
We watched an actor portray Picasso on screen and attempted to create our own Picasso faces! First we cut up pictures of other children then drew faces in the style of Picasso until finally cutting and rearranging our own faces.
We think the effect is very cool and there were many delightful giggles coming from the children as they saw their friend’s work and tried to guess which picture belonged to each child!

Apparently, Picasso’s first word as a baby was the Spanish word for ‘pencil’.
Picasso first created a picture when he was 9 and then again at 15. Our children are only 5/6 years old and we think they are already creating masterpieces!
